555 Inspirations Award Presentation Ceremony On July 28th, overseas as well as domestic figureheads from different sectors were invited to attend the Grand Finale event. They were Richard Wrangham, Quanyu Huang, Liao Weijian, Tan Dun, Christine Choy, Fruit Chan, Jennifer Sharp, Yau Lop Poon, Eva Man, Wang Zhidong, Vincent Lau and Mark Leung. In "Figureheads Meet the Press" held in the afternoon, they shared experience with media from different provinces of China. After nearly four months of activities throughout the nation, the "555 Inspirations" Campaign came to a climax when five "555 Inspirations Stars" were announced at the ceremony. The five "555 Inspirations Stars" and their inspirations are: Wu Zhenguo of Xiamen, for "Anti-Boat-Sinking Device"; Hong Ming from Shanghai, for "Atmospheric Control: Greening of Deserts"; Jing Bei from Beijing, for "Heart Attack Early-Warning System"; Li Guohui from Guangzhou, for "Wireless Power Transmission"; and Xu Yexing from Nanjing, "Water Purifying Organisms". The five "555 Inspirations Stars" each receives over RMB170,000 in prizes including the "555 Inspirations Scholarship" worth RMB 55,500 in cash; a homepage for each individual winner from Sina.com; a three-year subscription to an on-line investment advisory service with AAStocks.com to the value of over RMB10,000; a top-of-the-line Breitling watch; an NEC telephone, NEFAX 320 and 106 fax machines; one year's free subscription to the Beijing Evening News and New Express; photography package from Basaar Image; and 9Q Chinese Platform and 9Q USB Mouse from QCode.
More Information of Figureheads Press Conferences "555 Inspirations" was launched April this year. In the short time since then, an overwhelming response of over 8,400 entries to the competition has been received and 555 were selected. Statistics of 555 entrants and information of the 10 finalists were announced in the press conferences on July 5th and July 14th separately.
More Information of 10 Finalists "555 Inspirations" Lead to a Brighter Future The 5th of May was a special day as it marked the alignment of five planets with the sun and moon. On this auspicious occasion, "555 Inspirations" kicked off nation-wide by inviting Dr. Buzz Aldrin, the second man who walked on the moon, and Mr. Wang Zhi Dong, the founder of Sina.com, the largest Chinese-language website in the world, as the officiating guests-of-honor at the evening's gala event in Guangzhou. Yue Quan, a popular duo, opened with their debut inspiring theme song. "With an open mind, we can enrich our lives over and over with the inspiration that people have created across the centuries and will continue to create," Dr. Aldrin told his audience. "Inspirations are crucial in expediting China's already impressive development in the age of the Internet," Mr. Wang said. "I urge China's New Generation to come forth and join "555 Inspirations" that may one day change their lives and the society at large." "555 Inspirations Talkshows" In line with the regional launch of "555 Inspirations" a series of activities were organized from April 4 to April 20, 2000. Five talkshows were held in Chengdu, Dalian, Shanghai, Beijing and Guangzhou by six distinctive figureheads from various industries. Li Yang, founder of "Crazy English" showed his support for the campaign by conducting all the talkshows. Liang Li Ren, the inventor of a ground-breaking Chinese word processing software "Qcode" and "9Q Chinese Platform", also conducted several similar activities in Chengdu, Dalian and Guangzhou. As for the Wall Street Financial whiz, Lu Ping Xing, he held "court" in Shanghai and Beijing. The highlight at the Shanghai talkshow was the presence of Zhu Jian Hua, retired high jump athlete, as the guest-of-honor. Finally, Wang Zhi Dong, founder of sina.com, was featured in a prerecorded interview at all the talkshows. |
